Hair loss related to dandruff?

Postby shelle » Fri Dec 08, 2006 1:20 pm

I am a 21 year old female- When I was 14 I had a bald spot (alopecia)form on the crown of my head, but I used some cream that my doctor prescibed and my hair grew back. Then when I started University 4 years ago, I noticed a gradual amount of hair loss. Then 2 years ago I started using a hair straightener and that caused more hair loss. Then a year ago I got my hair chemically straightened. But now- I have stopped using the straightening iron for the past 3-4 months, the chemically straightened part of my hair grew out- so I cut my hair short- But I still continue to lose hair!!! When my hair is wet, you can see that my hair is thin in the front center of my head.

My mother has also experienced hair loss- but I think that has to do with menopause. My sister is also experiencing a great amount of hair loss- but she has never used a hair straightner or done anything chemically to her hair except wash it with shampoo.

I have noticed an increase in dandruff- it forms in large spots on my head. I have been using Head and Shoulders- but that seems to only make the dandruff more visible. I know that this is a long post- but I am going out of my mind- hair is a crucial thing for any girl!

Dandruff is the main reason of hair fall due to which hair become so thin and so unhealthy. By conditioning hair with hot coconut oil daily we can improve our hair growth. Like this treatment on web you can find a lot of home remedies to stop hair fall which is so effective and easy.

A lot of hair loss sufferers swear by Nizoral shampoo to help retain hairs, which has the added bonus of being the best shampoo for cleansing the scalp of dandruff caused by fungal infection of the scalp. I haven't used head and shoulders for a long time but I remember it was a fairly drying shampoo of both hair and scalp, Nizoral feels a lot less aggressive.

Good luck

Hi Shelle:
Are you in the US? If so, I can send you some samples of Hair Cycle shampoo. Dr. Cole developed this product. It works well for me and a lot of other people. Often times the reason for hair loss can be a mystery. It's a good idea to see a dermatologist first. If the dermatologist can't pinpoint a cause, it doesn't hurt to try products that have a track record of proven success. Personally I experienced hair loss while using an antihistamine with glucosamine and chondroitin. If you would like to try Hair Cycle shampoo, call Dr. Cole's office at 678-566-1011 and ask for Chuck.

Citnews- you got hair loss from Glucosamine? I take that for my joints :-o I never really gave it much thought but I generally assumed that anything good for the skin (fish oil, vit E, zinc, msm etc would only be beneficial for the hair) is there a link with these supplements and hair loss?

Thanks

I was using Allegra for hives and glucosamine/chondroitin for joint pain. While experiencing hair loss, I looked up these three products. Others complained of hair loss while using them as well. Once I stopped, I began using Rogaine and the condition of my hair improved some. I try to keep in mind that you can look just about anything up on the Internet and find someone having some kind of adverse reaction. I did find a lot of people complaining about hair loss from these three though. Hives were probably a reaction to dust mites. We got rid of the carpet and installed hardwoods and the allergic reactions went away. I took the glucosamine and chondroitin for joint pain. A change in diet eliminated that issue. I will never take any of those three again.

Oh dear, I take a gram of both of those every day & a gram of MSM - I'm not sure I would say that I noticed my hair getting worse because of them- then then I do always take them. I think quite a few people on hairlosshelp use MSM just to benefit their hair! I have never had a big shedding of hair except post Nobel Clinic surgery with some proper shock loss- other than that Ive just had a slow steady thinning- which given my fin / 15% minox / Every herb in the book washed down with green tea regimen is a bit harsh but thems the breaks ;-)

Might try halving my dose and see if it makes any difference.

Best

First, check what causes your dandruff...go see dermatologist and let him diagnose you. If it's from skin disease like saboreha then you should use special products for that condition.
If not, then i will suggest to start experience with Nizoral, see how it works. since the best approach is to mix 2 or 3 different shampoo to fight dandruff i will also suggest to try selsun blue and head & shoulders, i found the combination of the three to work on my head. if salsun blue does't work good on your head you can try Dandrex, both contain selenium.
try to wash your hair 4 times a week, each time with a different shampoo from these mentioned above.

Hi, Peterfrum! This is why it is really important to use brands of shampoos/conditioners that are more natural and do not contain harsh sulfates (Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate, etc.) These sulfates are commonly used to clean bathroom floors and tend to irritate most people's scalps (causing redness, discomfort, itchiness, dandruff). One of the reasons I still use the Hair Cycle shampoo is because it doesn't contain any of these harmful ingredients and doesn't cause my shoulders to experience 'white snow'. It varies from person to person, but I'd say generally washing your hair every other day or even every day will not harm it if you are using a gentle, effective shampoo. Best of luck to you!

P.S. If you are in the US, we'd be happy to send you some free samples of our shampoo and conditioner! www.haircycle.com
